Ralph Anderson Interfaith Dialog Greeting from Ken Starbuck
Welcome to our Ralph Anderson Interfaith Dialogues for the 2014-2015 season. I have been busy this past year serving on the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship Search Committee, and after a year's work we have called The Rev. Sarah Richards to be our settled minister. It is good to be back serving with you in our local interfaith endeavors, at a time when it is so important to have a clear understanding of one another and not just a 24 hour news cycle interpretation of religion.
We will be having a RAID planning meeting on September 30 at 7:00 at the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship. All are welcomed and we encourage new ideas about how we can more effectively communicate with one another about interfaith issues in southern Illinois. Our first event will be on Monday, October 13, at 7:30 at the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship. Darren Sherkat, Chair of the Sociology Department at SIU, will lead a discussion of his newly published book (August of 2014) Changing Faith.

6th Annual LGBTQ Pride Picnic Sunday, September 14 @ 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM Church of the Good Shepherd UCC 515 Orchard Dr
On Sunday, September 14, the Southern Illinois area will celebrate diversity and love at the 6th annual LGBTQ Pride Picnic. This free, family-friendly, fun-filled event will include lots of local entertainment, great food, guest speakers, games, and prizes. The Picnic will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd, 515 Orchard Dr. in Carbondale. An open and affirming worship service kicks off the day at 11:00 AM. The service focuses on issues faced by the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, and queer) community. This year, we celebrate the long-overdue legal recognition of same-sex marriages. To honor this important milestone, the worship service will recognize and give a blessing to queer couples and families who got married or will be getting married. The service is sure to touch the hearts of anyone!
After the service, the festivities move outside on the large lawn, where, from 1-5, everyone can enjoy food, entertainment, and festivities at the Pride Picnic. The kids (young and not-so-young) can bounce around in the bouncy house, get their faces painted, and dance to the tunes of local bands. Returning this year are Blanche DuBois, beloved drag queen and southern Illinois native, and her troupe of drag performers. Other entertainment includes the V2T2 cabaret, a blues duo, and teen band The Sycamores. Picnic-goers can also check out silent auction items, vendors, and information booths from organizations such as the Jackson County Health Department (who will also be doing free HIV testing) and the Rainbow Café. Hosts of the local radio shows Beyond the Binary and Isn't it Queer? will also be on hand. Love balloons? You can get your very own balloon creation from Professor Play!
